roll & hole

For the crafty minded: Roll & Hole is a monthly crafting magazine for people who love to make things

brief

Create a front and back cover, contents page, news item and interview spread

aim

Move away from a typical craft magazine aesthetic in favour of a more considered and refined style. It was important to me to keep the sense of excitement that comes from starting a new craft or DIY project

inside spread

I used a mix of formats across the magazine. The contents page uses a more mechanical drawing style, while the news pages are built on small, modular grids. The interview spreads are much simpler. I wanted the layouts to match how someone might want to read them; something calm and easy to sit with over a drink, or quicker, bite-sized sections to dip in and out of

idea

I wanted to think about the emotions behind crafting — the basic, practical actions like rolling and piercing materials, the sense of proportion and placement needed to create something to be proud of, and the idea of embracing imperfection while drawing on inspiration from artists of the past. From this, I came up with the title Roll & Hole. I used the Vitruvian Man as a design symbol, and introduced a scrapbook-style background to help bring these ideas together
